You have added AdBlue, but the warning is still there. Worse, the dashboard is counting down the miles until the engine will no longer restart. Before buying more fluid or paying for a reset, check exactly what the message says.
A low-level alert and a diesel exhaust fluid quality or dosing warning need different responses. This guide explains the distinction and the information to gather before deciding whether to repair your Jaguar or sell it with the fault disclosed.
Low AdBlue, incorrect quality or a dosing fault?
AdBlue is another name for diesel exhaust fluid, or DEF. It goes in a separate tank and is used by the exhaust emissions system. It is not a diesel fuel additive. Jaguar explains the system in its DEF and diesel-emissions guidance.
Read the whole message, rather than just the warning symbol:
- A low-level or refill message concerns the fluid supply. Follow the refill instructions for your model and year.
- An incorrect-quality message reports a problem detected by the system. Do not assume another top-up will resolve it.
- A dosing-system malfunction needs assessment of the fault, rather than treating it as an empty tank.
Jaguar's Euro 6 guidance describes both low-fluid alerts and quality or malfunction alerts leading to a restart restriction. The wording alone does not identify a failed component. Ask the repairer what its tests have actually established.
This is also separate from a diesel particulate filter warning. If the message refers to the exhaust filter, use our Jaguar DPF guide.
What does “no engine restarts” mean?
The countdown warns of a restriction on restarting the engine. Jaguar says that, when the low-fluid countdown reaches zero, the engine will not restart after it is switched off. A system malfunction can also lead to a restart restriction if it is not corrected.
Treat that as a reason to arrange help promptly, not as a guaranteed distance you can safely keep driving. Other warnings or abnormal behaviour may require an earlier stop. Do not leave the engine running to try to work around the restriction.
Use Jaguar's vehicle-specific owner information for the correct instructions. Avoid applying a refill quantity or procedure from a different engine, model year or internet video. If the car already refuses to start, arrange assistance rather than repeated starting attempts.
Why is the warning still there after a top-up?
First, establish whether the original alert was actually a low-level warning. A receipt for fresh AdBlue tells the garage what was added; it does not show that a quality or dosing fault has been repaired.
Write down the amount added, the date, the product used and the exact message before and afterwards. Keep a photograph of the container label if available. If you are unsure which filler was used, tell the repairer before attempting to start the car.
Do not keep pouring in fluid because the warning has not cleared. Ask a qualified repairer to check the situation against the handbook. A useful report will separate the stored fault codes, the tests carried out and the reason for the proposed repair.
Is a Jaguar AdBlue reset enough?
A reset is not, on its own, evidence that the cause has been corrected. Before agreeing to work described simply as an “AdBlue reset”, ask:
- Is the price for diagnosis, a repair or only clearing a warning?
- What has been confirmed, and what still needs testing?
- Why does the proposed work address the fault on this particular car?
- How will you check the countdown and warning after the work?
- What happens if the same message returns?
Ask for the total including labour, parts, VAT and any follow-up checks. An advertised starting price is not a quote for your Jaguar. If the car has already had work, supply the invoice so the next garage can see what was replaced or tested.
Repair it or get an offer as it stands?
A defined repair may make sense if the Jaguar otherwise suits you and you want to keep it. Check any existing warranty before authorising work, including whether approval is needed first.
If you were already planning to sell, compare the full repair cost with the likely difference between a repaired sale and an offer now. Include other known faults in that decision. Paying to remove one warning will not resolve unrelated work the car needs.
We buy faulty diesel Jaguars, including the XE and XF. For a useful offer, send the registration, mileage, postcode, dashboard wording and any garage report. Say whether it still starts and whether it can roll and steer. You do not need to clear the message before requesting a valuation.
Get a free Jaguar valuation. If you accept, we arrange free mainland UK collection and secure bank-transfer payment, cleared before the car leaves. Our non-runner collection checklist explains what to have ready.
