An XJ sitting low on the drive is a worrying sight, especially if it rises when started and sinks again later. It needs investigation, but that symptom alone does not tell you whether you need an air spring, a compressor or a different repair.
Before authorising parts, identify the XJ generation, record the exact warning and get the fault tested. If the resulting bill makes keeping it difficult, you can also request a valuation for your Jaguar XJ in its current condition.
Which XJ suspension system are you dealing with?
The X350 and facelift X358 use air suspension at all four corners. The later X351 uses rear air suspension. Jaguar's Classic Parts catalogue for the earlier XJ and its later XJ technical information are useful starting points for understanding that difference.
Give a garage the registration or VIN rather than asking for a generic “XJ suspension repair”. Parts, diagnostic procedures and warning messages vary. Previous modifications matter too: tell them if the car has already been converted to a different suspension setup.
Adaptive damping and air suspension are also different functions. A damping-system warning is not, by itself, proof of a leaking air spring.
Can you drive with a suspension warning?
For the earlier XJ, Jaguar's handbook distinguishes an amber air-suspension fault from the red “Vehicle Too Low” message. At start-up, it says to wait for the vehicle to rise and the low-height message to clear before driving. See pages 100 and 151 of the printed handbook.
Follow the handbook for your exact car. If it stays low, a tyre is touching the body or handling feels abnormal, arrange professional assistance instead of attempting a journey to the garage. Do not assume that clearing a dashboard message has repaired the cause.
Do not crawl beneath an air-suspended car relying on its ride height for clearance. It can lower. Leave underbody inspection and lifting to someone with suitable equipment and the correct procedure.
Why does an XJ sink when parked?
Small height changes are not automatically a failed component: Jaguar notes that temperature and gradual air loss can affect the parked height. A marked, repeated drop, particularly on one side, deserves investigation.
Useful observations to give the garage include:
- Which corner or end is low, and whether the car is parked on level ground.
- Whether it drops within minutes, overnight or only after several days.
- Whether it returns to normal height when started.
- Any unusual compressor noise and the exact dashboard message.
- Recent suspension work and copies of previous invoices.
Take photographs from outside the car before and after the drop. Do not keep restarting it solely to force it back up.
Jaguar's X350 diagnostic bulletin JTB00067 (archived manufacturer PDF) identifies leaks at components or connections as possible reasons for a car lowering after several hours. That is a reason to test for leaks, not an instruction to replace whichever part an online discussion suggests.
What should a repair quote include?
Ask the garage to explain what its checks found and which component has failed. “Suspension fault” is a symptom, not a complete diagnosis.
A useful written quote should identify the affected corner or component, the proposed part and whether it is new or remanufactured. Ask whether the investigation covered leaks and compressor operation, and whether any necessary setup, calibration and checks after repair are included.
Compare the total including labour and VAT, together with the parts and labour warranty. A compressor-only price is not comparable with a quote that also repairs an identified leak. Nor is a parts price from an overseas retailer a fitted UK repair cost.
If someone recommends changing the suspension design, ask what functions would change and what that means for the car's use and insurance before agreeing. It is a different decision from replacing a failed original-system component.
When does repairing make sense?
A clearly identified fault on an otherwise sound XJ can be worth repairing, particularly if you want to keep the car. Look beyond the suspension bill: include other known work, recovery, and how long you can manage without it.
If you intend to sell after repairing, compare the realistic sale proceeds after those costs with a firm offer as the car stands. An advertised price for a fault-free XJ is not a guaranteed sale price. Our non-runner valuation guide explains the other details that influence an offer.
Selling an XJ with collapsed suspension
We buy Jaguars with suspension faults. Send the registration, mileage, warning message, photos and any diagnosis you have. Explain how low it sits and describe driveway access so collection can be planned properly; do not try to raise it using improvised supports.
Read the non-running Jaguar collection checklist before the handover. We offer free mainland UK collection and bank-transfer payment cleared before the car leaves. Get a free, no-obligation valuation and compare it with the repair quote before deciding.
Prepared from Jaguar owner and technical information, checked on 13 October 2026. A warning or photograph cannot replace diagnosis of the individual vehicle.
