Your Jaguar is on the driveway, you have declared it off the road and you have decided not to repair it. You can still sell it. The practical issue is arranging the handover without using the car on the road in a way its status does not allow.

What SORN does, and what it does not tell a buyer
A Statutory Off Road Notification tells DVLA that a vehicle is being kept off the public road. It is not a diagnosis: the Jaguar might be a non-runner, awaiting repairs or simply no longer in use.
Explain both its status and its condition. “SORN on the drive” leaves important questions unanswered. “SORN on the drive, starts but will not select drive, MOT expired” gives a buyer a much clearer starting point.
Keep the car off the public road while waiting
Under GOV.UK's SORN rules, the car must be kept off the public road. The limited driving exception is a journey to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment. Delivering it to a buyer is not that exception.
Do not move it onto the street to make collection easier. Tell us if it is behind a gate, on a slope, in a garage or blocked by another car, and agree the collection arrangements first.
SORN does not prove a car is safe to drive. If you decide to put it back into use instead of selling, check all the requirements for lawful road use, including tax, insurance, any required MOT and roadworthiness.
Does it need insurance just to be sold?
GOV.UK says a vehicle kept off the road and declared SORN does not need motor insurance. That does not permit an uninsured road test or a drive to the buyer.
Any cover you choose to retain for the stored car is a separate question. Check your policy before changing it and arrange the handover around the car's actual status. If you are unsure how it can be moved, discuss recovery rather than assume it can be driven.
What happens to SORN when you sell?
Your SORN ends automatically when you sell the vehicle, and it does not transfer to the next keeper. If the new keeper will also keep it off the road, they need their own declaration. Complete the sale notification to DVLA and retain the confirmation. Vehicle tax does not transfer either; DVLA refunds any eligible full remaining months after notification.
Use the official DVLA sale service and instructions. If you do not have the V5C, tell us before collection: DVLA requires a written notification for a sale without the logbook. Our paperwork guide covers the wider handover.
Prepare a useful description before asking for an offer
Send the reg, mileage and postcode, then add:
- How long the Jaguar has been parked and why it came off the road.
- Whether it starts, and whether it can roll and steer, if you know.
- Known faults, missing parts and any damage.
- MOT status, available keys and whether you have the V5C.
- Any access restrictions at the collection address.
Do not start or move a car just to test something you are unsure is safe. It is fine to tell us that its present running condition is unknown. If the battery is flat, describe that alongside the original reason it was parked.
You can get an offer before putting it back on the road
Taxing the car or paying for an MOT is not a prerequisite for requesting our valuation. Its model, condition, mileage and faults matter to the offer; the SORN label alone does not establish its value.
