After an accident, the repair estimate is only one part of the decision. You also need to know the insurance position, who can authorise a sale and how the Jaguar can be moved.
We buy damaged Jaguars. Before asking for an offer, gather the available assessment and explain whether an insurance claim is still in progress. Do not assume visible bodywork damage tells the whole story, or that a car which starts is safe to drive.
Resolve the insurance position first
If an insurer is handling the damage, speak to them before agreeing a separate sale or moving the car from storage. Ask whether an assessment is complete, whether a settlement changes ownership and whether you have agreed to retain the vehicle.
Get the position in writing. An offer from a buyer is not permission to dispose of a car controlled by an insurer or another party. Tell us about any outstanding finance or ownership uncertainty before accepting an offer; do not assume a settlement arrangement is included in our collection service.
Understand the write-off category
An insurer decides whether a vehicle is written off. GOV.UK explains the categories:
- Category N: repairable non-structural damage.
- Category S: repairable structural damage.
- Category A: the whole vehicle must be crushed.
- Category B: the body shell must be crushed, although other parts may be salvaged.
Categories S and N may return to use only after repair to a roadworthy condition. “Non-structural” is not a statement that the damage is trivial or that the car can be driven now. Category A and B vehicles are not ordinary repair-and-resale cars. Agree their disposal route with the insurer and an authorised treatment facility; do not arrange a sale on the basis that they can return to the road.
If the category is unknown, say so. Do not choose a category yourself from photographs or describe a damaged car as uncategorised simply because the insurer has not yet told you the outcome.
Do you have to repair it before asking for an offer?
You can enquire about selling a damaged Jaguar as it stands. Whether a purchase is appropriate depends on its condition, status and your authority to sell it. Send the category and report, if available, before agreeing the next step.
For repairable damage, compare a written repair estimate with an offer for the current vehicle. Include any confirmed storage, recovery and other costs that apply to each option. If you would repair to sell, use a realistic selling figure that reflects its recorded history.
Keep an insurance settlement comparison separate from a private sale calculation. Do not add an insurer's payment to a sale price without confirming the retention terms and what you would actually own afterwards.
What photos and information help?
Start with the reg, model, mileage and collection postcode. Add:
- Clear photos of each side and the visible damaged areas, taken safely.
- The insurer's category and assessment, or confirmation that these are pending.
- Any garage report or itemised estimate you already hold.
- Whether airbags have deployed, fluids are leaking or wheels are damaged, if known.
- Whether keys are available and whether the car can roll and steer.
- Where the Jaguar is stored, who can release it and any access restrictions.
Include known faults that existed before the accident. A buyer needs the complete description, not just the most recent damage. You do not need to dismantle anything or move the car to get better pictures.
Arrange recovery around its condition
If the Jaguar is unsafe or its condition is uncertain, do not drive it to demonstrate that it moves. Discuss collection and pass on any handling instructions from the insurer, garage or recovery operator. Mention an electric or hybrid model and any suspected battery damage at the outset so suitability and handling can be assessed.
For a repairable vehicle we agree to buy, collection needs a clear access and release plan. Our non-runner collection checklist covers the practical details. A vehicle being scrapped instead follows a different process: use the official scrapping guidance.
