You have the Jaguar and its keys, but the service book is missing or the paperwork stops several years ago. That does not prevent you asking us for an offer. Service records are useful, but we also assess the model, mileage, current condition and known faults.
Before describing the car as having no history, check what records are actually available. A short search may give you a more complete account of its maintenance without paying for work simply to make a sale.
A missing book does not always mean missing records
Jaguar offers Online Service History, so paper stamps are not the only place to look. Check whether a digital record is available for your vehicle and ask a Jaguar retailer for help if you cannot find it.
Keep the V5C question separate: the logbook and maintenance records serve different purposes. If either is missing, tell us which one.
Do not assume an online record contains every job ever carried out. Compare it with invoices you hold and identify any gaps. An independent garage's invoice may explain work that is not evident from the documents you first found.
Useful places to check include old emails, the document wallet and garages that serviced the car during your ownership. Ask whether they can supply copies of your invoices, subject to their records and identity checks. You may not be able to recover paperwork from earlier owners.
Sort the evidence into a simple timeline
Put each available record in date order and note the mileage and work described. Keep the source document with it. A buyer can then see what is evidenced and where information is missing.
Distinguish between:
- A service record showing routine maintenance carried out.
- An invoice for a particular repair or replacement part.
- A diagnostic report describing a fault.
- An MOT record showing the test result at that time.
A recent major repair may be useful information, but it does not fill several years of missing service records. Equally, a gap in the paperwork does not prove no maintenance happened. Describe what you can document and what you cannot.
MOT history can help, but it is not service history
The official MOT history service shows recorded test mileages, results and identified defects. It can help you check dates and understand the car's test history.
It does not provide an invoice for an oil change or prove a scheduled service was completed. Keep the two types of evidence separate when describing the Jaguar. If the documents disagree, flag the discrepancy rather than choosing the figure that looks best.
How should you describe partial history?
Be specific. For example: “Digital records available up to 2021, then invoices for services in 2023 and 2025; no record found for the intervening period.” That is more useful than calling the history full because you have a folder of receipts.
If a previous owner said a repair was done but you have no evidence, tell us that it is unverified. Do not recreate stamps, alter dates or turn an estimate into proof of completed work.
For a broken Jaguar, include the present fault alongside the maintenance information. A documented repair from several years ago does not establish the cause of a warning appearing today.
Will missing history reduce the offer?
It can affect a buyer's confidence and assessment, but there is no fixed percentage deduction that accurately applies to every Jaguar. Age, mileage, condition, specification and the work the car now needs all matter.
