A broken Jaguar and an unfinished finance agreement are two separate problems. You can ask what the car is worth, but a valuation does not give you permission to sell a vehicle that still belongs to the finance company.
If your Jaguar is on HP or PCP, the finance and transfer of ownership must be dealt with before the sale completes. Tell any prospective buyer about the agreement at the outset. An engine failure or a car being off the road does not automatically cancel it.
First, check how the Jaguar was financed
Look at the agreement itself rather than relying on the monthly payment description.
Hire purchase or PCP: the finance company normally retains ownership until the required payments have been made. Jaguar Financial Services explains that ownership transfers after the required final payment and option-to-purchase fee; up-to-date settlement figures are available on request.
Personal contract hire or leasing: you are paying to use the car. It is not yours to sell. Contact the leasing company about the breakdown and your options.
An unsecured personal loan used to buy the car: this is different from finance secured on the vehicle. You will normally own the car, but selling it does not erase the loan. MoneyHelper explains how unsecured personal loans work. Check the agreement if you are unsure which arrangement you have.
Being named on the V5C does not settle the ownership question. Our logbook guide explains the distinction between the registered keeper and the owner.
Ask the lender for a current settlement figure
For HP or PCP, request the amount needed to settle the agreement, its expiry date and the lender's instructions for payment and release of its interest. Do not calculate it by multiplying the monthly payment by the months left: that can miss the final payment, charges or adjustments.
Some buyers can arrange payment directly to a lender as part of an agreed transaction. Black Horse describes this route, alongside settling the agreement yourself. The process depends on the lender and buyer, and needs to be agreed explicitly.
Keep scheduled payments going unless your lender agrees otherwise. Check the account has actually been settled and retain written confirmation. A buyer saying that payment has been sent is not the same as confirmation from the lender.
With We Buy Broken Jaguars, declare the finance before accepting an offer or booking collection. Do not assume finance settlement is included in our collection service. We need to confirm whether we can proceed and what must be resolved first.
What if the Jaguar is worth less than the settlement?
That gap is negative equity. A fault can reduce the car's current value without reducing the amount needed to settle the agreement.
For illustration only, if the settlement is £7,200 and a buyer offers £4,800, the gap is £2,400 before any other costs. Those are example figures, not a Jaguar valuation. You would need an agreed way to cover the shortfall for that settlement-and-sale route to work.
Compare the lender's current figure with an offer that reflects the actual fault. A valuation for a running, fault-free F-Pace is not a reliable comparison for one awaiting engine repairs. Our non-runner value guide explains the vehicle details a buyer needs.
If the shortfall or monthly payments are unaffordable, speak to the lender before committing to a sale. MoneyHelper's guide to ending car finance early explains other routes and where to get free debt advice. Taking on another loan is not the only possible response.
Check a fault claim before disposing of the car
If you think the Jaguar was not of satisfactory quality when supplied, contact the finance provider before agreeing a sale or authorising major work. That question is separate from how much the car is worth today.
The Financial Ombudsman Service's car-finance guidance explains that it considers the fault, the car's quality at supply and what the provider or dealer has done. Age, mileage and normal wear matter; a later breakdown does not automatically entitle you to a refund.
Keep the advert, agreement, breakdown report, garage findings and repair invoices. If you complain, use the provider's complaints process first. Preserve the evidence and clarify any inspection requirements before handing the Jaguar to someone else.
Is handing it back the same as selling it?
No. Early settlement, voluntary termination and an end-of-contract return are different routes with different consequences. A voluntary termination returns the car to the finance provider; it does not leave you with a car to sell.
Ask the lender for the relevant terms and any amount payable, taking the Jaguar's condition into account. Do not assume that reaching halfway through the agreement means you have paid half the total amount, or that a broken car can be returned without any further questions or costs.
Getting a useful valuation while you decide
You can request a free, no-obligation Jaguar valuation to help establish the car side of the calculation. Include the registration, mileage, fault description, collection postcode and the fact that finance is outstanding. If you have a diagnosis or written quote, mention that too.
Before a purchase or collection is agreed, the ownership and finance position must be clear. Once you have the right to sell, our broken Jaguar selling guide covers the usual handover process.
