Can you sell a Jaguar without a V5C logbook?

Yes, you can sell a Jaguar without its V5C logbook. We can consider Jaguars with a missing logbook, including non-runners, but tell us at the valuation stage so we can agree the paperwork needed before collection.

The missing document creates an admin job; it does not tell you what the car is worth. An XF with a gearbox fault still needs valuing on its model, mileage, condition and repair needs. You do, however, need to establish that you have the right to sell it.

A V5C records the keeper, not ownership

The V5C names the registered keeper. It is not proof that the person named owns the car, as Police National Legal Database guidance explains.

When you enquire, explain why the logbook is unavailable. Have photo ID and any purchase invoice or receipt available, and tell the buyer if the vehicle is financed, belongs to a company or is being sold on someone else's behalf. Those situations may need additional checks or authority. A receipt can help explain the car's history; it does not remove the need to check your right to sell.

Missing service records are a separate issue. The logbook is not the service book, and replacing it will not recover maintenance history. Read our guide to selling a Jaguar without service history if both are missing.

Should you replace the logbook before selling?

Replacing it can simplify the handover, particularly if you want to compare offers from buyers who require a V5C. It is worth asking your intended buyer before spending money or delaying a collection.

According to GOV.UK's replacement logbook guidance, a replacement usually costs £25. Eligible online applications normally arrive within five to seven working days. The online replacement route is for the current registered keeper when the recorded details do not need changing; it is not the right route for every missing-document situation.

If you have moved, changed your name or are not recorded as the keeper, follow the relevant instructions on that page. Do not order a replacement to an old address simply to get the process started.

For a broken Jaguar taking up space, you can request a valuation while sorting out the paperwork. Make clear whether you are waiting for a replacement or intend to sell without one.

How to notify DVLA without a V5C

You cannot use DVLA's online sale notification service without the logbook. For a sale without it, DVLA instructs the seller to write, giving:

  • Your name and address.
  • The registration, make and model.
  • The exact date of sale.
  • The name and address of the new keeper or motor trader.

Send the notification to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA. Check the official page for the current instructions when you sell.

Agree the buyer's full details before handover, keep a copy of your letter and retain proof of posting alongside your sale receipt. Keep DVLA's confirmation when it arrives. These are useful records if you later need to establish when the vehicle left your ownership.

Vehicle tax does not pass to the buyer. DVLA cancels it after notification and refunds any eligible full remaining months. A car being sold without a logbook is not automatically being scrapped; make sure the paperwork reflects the actual transaction.

What to agree before collection

Avoid leaving the missing-logbook conversation until the transporter arrives. When arranging a sale, confirm:

  1. Which documents the buyer needs to check your identity and authority to sell.
  2. The agreed price and the faults or damage that valuation is based on.
  3. Who is preparing the DVLA notification and how you will keep a record of it.
  4. Where the car is parked, whether it rolls and steers, and what keys are available.

If you want to keep a private registration, deal with that before selling. Our private number plate guide explains why a non-running car can complicate retention.

For a Jaguar that cannot be driven onto a transporter, use our non-runner collection checklist. Missing paperwork and difficult access are separate things to tell the collection team about.

Get an offer with the missing logbook declared

Send us the registration, mileage, a clear description of the fault and your collection postcode. Mention the missing V5C at the same time so we can explain what is needed for your particular sale.

We offer free mainland UK collection and payment by bank transfer, cleared before the Jaguar leaves. Request a free, no-obligation Jaguar valuation to find out where you stand before deciding whether to replace the logbook or arrange a sale.

DVLA guidance checked on 13 October 2026. This guide covers an ordinary vehicle sale; tell us if the ownership or authority to sell needs additional clarification.
